Project Design

The big ecological premise:

What happens when a lotic habitat becomes abruptly lentic?

The Subject: The Milwaukee River (Milwaukee County)

Form of impoundment: Concrete, low-head dam
Sampling Sites: Kletzsch, Estabrook, and Hubbard Park
How do dams impact the ‘normal’ paradigm of a stream and its community?

Comparing longitudinal (upstream, downstream) and lateral (land-water interface) dimensions within habitats above and below dammed sites along the Milwaukee River in Milwaukee County will indicate how these imposed abstractions alter the stream community and affect the overall health of the river.

This inquisition and assessment first necessitates further exposition of the role environmental variables play in altering stream community.
